Camping

Whether you are traveling with your family or with friends, at East Fork Campground and Horse Hotel, has you covered. Their camp sites have plenty of space for you to park and stretch out, allowing you to spend more time making memories with your kids while enjoying the serenity of the beautiful Greenbrier River along with sweeping landscape views and unlimited outdoor adventure. As the name suggests, it is an equine friendly camp. They have available stables as well as campsites ranging from full hook-up sites to primitive waterfront sites.

Cycling

Cycling near Durbin, WV, offers a variety of options, from the gentle, 22-mile West Fork Rail Trail to the more rugged mountain biking in the Mower Basin and Tea Creek areas of the Monongahela National Forest. Road cyclists can also enjoy scenic routes between Cass and the Green Bank Observatory. 

  • West Fork Trail:

    A 22-mile, mostly flat trail with a ballast surface that follows the West Fork of the Greenbrier River. It's ideal for a serene, out-and-back ride and is accessible from Durbin. 

  • Greenbrier River Trail:

    At 78 miles, this is West Virginia's longest rail trail. It's located to the west of Durbin and is accessible via the nearby town of Marlinton. 

  • Mower Basin Trail System:

    A well-known area for mountain biking, offering a network of singletrack trails. 

  • Green Bank Observatory:

    Offers beginner-friendly routes on green trails that circle the radio telescope. The terrain includes paved roads, turf, and forest paths. 

Community Garden

The Durbin Community garden is a great way for individuals and families to learn about raising their own vegetable, fruits, herbs and flowers.  It is also great for people who don’t have a plot of land, but want to grow their own food.

Located about 100 yards from downtown Durbin, this is a convenient location and is easy to access on foot or bike and has parking for 8 cars. 

The Durbin Community Garden initiative shares tools, techniques, seeds and the harvest! The garden runs May 1st - Oct 15th.

Cross Country Skiing

The West Fork Rail Trail is a 22-mile, mostly flat trail that follows the West Fork of the Greenbrier River. It's ideal for a serene, out-and-back cross country skiing adventure and is accessible from Durbin. 

Fishing

Whether fly fishing for brook trout or trolling the river for smallmouth bass, this is an angler’s dream location.

Durbin, WV, offers excellent fishing for trout in the Greenbrier River and its East Fork, which are frequently stocked from January to May, and also provides opportunities for warm-water species like smallmouth bass in the summer. Other nearby spots include the stocked East Fork of the Greenbrier, Shavers Fork (with a catch-and-release section), and Lake Buffalo. Fishing is possible from both wading and floating, with numerous access points available.  

Green Bank Observatory

Located roughly 12 miles from downtown Durbin.

On October 17, 1957 the groundbreaking and dedication of the Green Bank site took place.  Within one year the first telescope on site was completed, the 85 ft Tatel Telescope.  Over the course of the next 10 years a total of five telescopes were place on site, ranging in size from the 40ft to 300ft in diameter. An additional number of test instruments had also been built, including Little Big Horn, and calibration instrument built down the side of a hill.

Over the past 60 years a number of new telescopes have been built at the site, including the 100-m Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, a fully steerable telescope which operate from 0.2 GHz through 116 GHz and is the premiere telescope operating across those wavelengths.

Hiking

With Durbin being situated near the geographic center of the Monongahela National Forest at the headwaters of the Greenbrier River and hugged on either side by the rising mountains, it features direct access to the High Falls to Cheat Trail and West Virginia’s longest hiking route, the 311-mile Allegheny Trail.

Horseback Riding

Durbin is a hub for horseback riding with numerous trails in the surrounding Monongahela National Forest. Key options include the East Fork Campground and Horse Hotel, which has over 100 miles of trails, and the West Fork Trail, a converted railroad bed that runs from Durbin to Glady. Other trails to visit are the Allegheny Highlands Trail and the Big Foot Trail which are also accessible from the Durbin area. 

Lake Buffalo

Lake Buffalo is a 22-acre lake that offers anglers a quiet retreat. It is regularly stocked with trout by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Lake Buffalo is located near the town of Bartow.

Facilities include a parking lot, a picnic area, and a concrete boat ramp. While the lake is open year-round, toilets are closed in winter. For those looking for an extended stay there are dispersed campsites in the area.

Mushrooming

The Monongahela National Forest has diverse and abundant fungi which is legal to harvest for personal use. The best time is typically from March to May for morels, but the season can vary. Gaudineer Knob is noted as a particularly biodiverse spot near Durbin. The Yew Mountain Center in Hillsboro hosts forays throughout the year. Another great resource is the West Virginia Mushroom Club.

Train Rides

On the Greenbrier Express, Cass Scenic Railroad’s Shay steam engine travels round-trip from Cass to Durbin along the Greenbrier River.

The ride upriver to Durbin passes through a secluded wilderness portion of the 950,000-acre Monongahela National Forest featuring beautiful scenes of forested mountains at each turn of the river. Sightings of deer, river otters, and black bear along with a wide variety of eagles, hawks, ospreys, and other different species of aquatic birds are common.
